You may have heard of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, when thousands of people give themselves a challenge to write an entire novel in 30 days), but you may not know that there is entire NaNoWriMo program just for kids. It's free, open to K-12 grades, and unlike the adult program (which has a word-count goal of 50,000), younger participants can set their own goals based on their age and writing level. Participants who meet their goal get a Winner certificate at the end and a whole lot of bragging rights! Last year, over 100,000 kids took part. I've used the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program as a teacher and was impressed by the detailed, age-appropriate workbooks for elementary, middle, and high school students that guide every step of planning and writing a story. How about a little family novel-writing challenge this November?
