The poems in The Lost Words (read about the book here) are acrostics – the first letters of each line spell a word, in this case whatever bird or animal or tree or flower is the subject of that poem, the "lost" word the poet wants children to rediscover. For example, here is "Fern":
Fern's first form is furled,
Each frond fast as a fiddle-head.
Reach, roll and unfold follows. Fern flares.
Now fern is full fanned.
Spend some time this week paying close attention to something in your backyard – a particular tree, a squirrel, a spider, or the snow, perhaps. Look carefully. Listen. Smell. Touch. Then write an acrostic poem in which the first letters of each line spell the name of that thing, and each line describes some quality about it. See if you can capture the essence of that little piece of the world in your poem. (It doesn't have to rhyme!)
