Natalie Babbitt is the author of one of my favorite children's books of all time, Tuck Everlasting, but here's another book of hers you may not know. The Search for Delicious is a delightful fairy tale about a hidden spring, a mermaid's whistle, and a very unusual dictionary.
At the beginning of the book, the Prime Minister is writing a new dictionary in which words are defined by the best example that illustrates their meaning: "Annoying is a loose boot in a muddy place." "Bulky is a big bag of boxes." "Calamitous is saying no to the king." The word "delicious" poses a problem, since no one can agree on what food is the most delicious of all, and the argument nearly causes a civil war. It's a hilarious read-aloud for a family.
