The Hundred Dresses

My friend Jonathan Rogers and I were just talking about this book a few weeks ago, so I pulled it off my shelf for a reread and was struck again both by how beautiful it is and by how relevant it remains. It's a simple yet nuanced little picture of how children interact with each otherhow people interactand especially how we treat those who are different from us. I ache at Wanda Petrowski's failed attempts to fit into a world that looks on her with suspicion and ridicule, and at Maggie's timidity as she desires do the right thing. The tender illustrations perfectly suit a story whose plot hinges on wonder in the face of unexpected artistry. This is a lovely read-aloud for primary grades and up and one that can spark profound conversations about kindness and empathy. How many Wandas are hidden in our communities, longing to be seen and loved?
